Sculpfun Laser FAQ

What is a laser engraving machine used for?

A laser engraving machine is a device that utilizes a focused laser beam to remove material from surfaces, creating permanent marks or designs on various materials. This technology is widely used for applications such as industrial marking, signage, personalization, art and craft, prototyping, and fabrication.

What is the best laser engraver to start out with?

The best laser machine is the one that meets your need. For beginners, we recommend kickstarting your journey with a user-friendly, compact-design and low-cost laser before upgrading to high-end models. Sculpfun provides several entry-level options, such as the C1 Mini and iCube series.

What software is compatible with Sculpfun laser engravers and cutters?

All Sculpfun laser machines (except the G9) support LightBurn (paid) and LaserGRBL (free). The G9 is compatible with LightBurn and SGD Laser.

Mobile App Control:
For use with the Sculpfun App (iOS/Android), your machine must be an iCube series, SF-A9, or any model equipped with the TS1 touchscreen.

What materials can Sculpfun laser machines process?

Sculpfun Laser Material Compatibility:

Diode Laser Machines (Most Sculpfun Models)

Wood (cut/engrave)

✔Acrylic (engrave)

✔Leather (engrave)

✔Anodized/Coated Metals (mark)

✔Cardboard/Paper (cut/engrave)

✔Some Plastics (engrave)

❌ Clear Glass (needs coating)

❌ Raw Metals (requires IR module)

Dual-Laser Models (G9, iCube Ultra)

All diode capabilities PLUS:

✔Bare Metals (stainless steel, aluminum, brass)

✔Jewelry (marking)

✔Ceramics (marking)

What's the difference between common types of laser engraving machines?

CO₂ lasers use a gas mixture to emit light at wavelengths of 9.6–10.6 μm, making them ideal for engraving non-metallic materials like wood, acrylic, and leather.

Fiber lasers employ a solid-state source to produce 1.06 μm light, excelling in marking metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and brass with high precision.

Diode lasers rely on semiconductor diodes to generate shorter wavelengths (445–950 nm), suitable for engraving wood, leather, plastics, and some coated metals. Sculpfun specializes in diode lasers for DIY and small-scale projects.

Infrared (IR) lasers (typically 1064 nm) are another solid-state option, often used for marking metals and jewelry at lower power (1–2W), though slower than fiber lasers.

Each laser type has unique strengths and material limitations. To overcome these, Sculpfun introduced dual-laser machines (diode + IR), significantly expanding the range of processable materials.

Which laser engraver is best for metal engraving?

For basic metal marking, our G9 and iCube Ultra (equipped with a 1.2W infrared laser) are excellent choices. If you already own a Sculpfun diode laser machine, you can upgrade its capability by adding our infrared laser module.

For deep or industrial-grade metal engraving, a CO₂ or fiber laser machine is required, as they offer higher power and precision for demanding applications.
